Tropical Eosinophilia: Some Further Observations

چکیده
82 per cent out of a total white cell count of 22,300|c.mm. from Tong King, China. Bass (1941) refers to 7 cases with a similar picture from America and Havana. Ritchie (1944) describes tropical eosinophilia in an African patient from Tanganyika. Parsons-Smith (1944) reports it in an English airman after 10 months' stay in Egypt. Treu (1944) mentions it in a Chinese patient from Singapore. McGuire (1945) during a discussion on periarteritis nodosa, asthma and hypereosinophilia, refers to two American soldiers who developed tropical eosinophilia after staying in an island in South-west Pacific. Hirst and McCann (1945) report another case from Samoa, South Pacific. Within India itself, it seems to be a

Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia with Eosinophilic Leukemoid Reaction
A 7 year-old male presented with recurrent fever, cough and respiratory distress for over last 2 years. Based on extremely high eosinophil count, high Immunoglobulin E, increase in eosinophilic precursors in bone marrow, and positive antigen test for Wuchereria bancrofti, a diagnosis of Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia with Eosinophilic Leukemoid Reaction was made. Complete recovery was achieved...
متن کاملAcute Tropical Pulmonary Eosinophilia
Although acute tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) is well recognized as a manifestation of filarial infection, the processes that mediate the abnormalities of the lung in TPE are unknown. To evaluate the hypothesis that the derangements of the lower respiratory tract in this disorder are mediated by inflammatory cells in the local milieu we utilized bronchoalveolar lavage to evaluate affecte...
متن کاملA Study of Tropical Eosinophilia.
The aetiopathology of tropical eosinophilia presents a baffling problem in spite of a great deal of work on this subject in the last four years. The natural history of any disease rests on a good understanding of its pathology, and so far there have not been many pathological observations on the lung in this condition, possibly because of its apparently benign nature. This paper records the inv...
متن کاملTropical eosinophilia treated with cortisone.
Twenty-four subjects of tropical eosinophilia were treated with ACTH and a detailed paper1 giving the methods employed and the results already have been presented in this Journal. The present study to evaluate the place of cortisone in the treatment of tropical eosinophilia was planned on entirely similar lines. Cortisone acetate (Cortone, Merck) was administered orally over a 10day period afte...
متن کاملGenetic polymorphisms of eosinophil-derived neurotoxin and eosinophil cationic protein in tropical pulmonary eosinophilia.
Because eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) are critical in the pathogenesis of tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE), we analyzed genetic polymorphisms of both in 181 individuals from southern India with varying clinical manifestations of Wuchereria bancrofti infection (including 26 with TPE). Using haplotype frequency analysis, we identified four known (o...
